Rebecca was waiting inside Daniel’s office when we arrived.

She wasn't at her desk.

She wasn't pretending to work.

She was sitting in Daniel’s chair with a thick white folder in front of her.

Across the cover:

PROJECT M — MASTER FILE

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

“Where did you get that?”

Rebecca looked at me.

“Lock the door.”

Daniel didn't move.

“Rebecca.”

“My name is Emily.”

Hearing her say it herself made my stomach tighten.

Daniel locked the door.

Rachel stood beside me.

The moment Rebecca saw her, something changed.

“You found her.”

Rachel stared back.

“You knew I was looking for you?”

“For eleven years.”

Rachel's face crumpled.

“Then why didn't you contact me?”

“Because Adrian was watching you.”

“And working beside Daniel somehow made you safer?”

“No.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“It made him safer.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You became my assistant to protect me?”

“Yes.”

“For five years?”

“Yes.”

“You had access to my entire life.”

“That was the point.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew who Claire was when I hired you?”

“Yes.”

“You knew who I was?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

Emily looked down.

“I was told not to.”

“By who?”

She opened the folder.

“Nathan.”

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

“My father sent you?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

“So Nathan knew I was alive.”

“He always knew.”

“And he knew I married Claire.”

“Yes.”

Daniel turned away.

That answer hurt him more than he wanted us to see.

I stepped toward Emily.

“You sent the message saying I couldn't turn thirty.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your birthday isn't a birthday.”

“What does that mean?”

Emily opened the master file.

She removed three pages.

Each had my photograph.

But each listed a different name.

Claire Hart.

Claire Mercer.

And a third:

C-01.

I stared at it.

“What is C-01?”

Emily looked at me.

“The original trust identity.”

“I thought Project M used identities for children.”

“It did.”

“Then I'm another subject?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Project M was created because of you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Nathan said Daniel was the reason.”

“Nathan doesn't know everything.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“My biological father doesn't know?”

“No.”

“Then who does?”

“Adrian.”

I almost laughed.

Of course.

The man hunting us was apparently the only person who understood the whole story.

“What does ‘Claire is the trust’ mean?”

Emily turned the folder toward me.

“William Mercer knew Adrian was manipulating inheritance records.”

“We know that.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“You know the version Nathan discovered.”

“What version is that?”

“That Adrian wanted money.”

“He didn't?”

“He did.”

“But money wasn't the valuable part.”

She pulled out a handwritten diagram.

At the center:

C-01

Lines connected it to dozens of numbered identities.

M-01.

A-07.

E-03.

And many more.

Daniel pointed toward his code.

“M-01 is me.”

Emily nodded.

Rachel found hers.

“A-07.”

Then Emily pointed toward E-03.

“That's me.”

I looked back at C-01.

“And that's me.”

“Yes.”

“What connects us?”

Emily stared at me.

“Your identity.”

“That makes no sense.”

“Because Claire Mercer wasn't created as a person.”

My heart started pounding.

“What was it created as?”

“A legal beneficiary.”

Nobody spoke.

Emily continued.

“William created a trust before you were born.”

“How?”

“It didn't require you to exist yet.”

The trust was apparently written for the first legally recognized biological granddaughter born through Adrian’s family line.

That child would become the beneficiary.

Me.

“So William expected Adrian to have a daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Adrian from controlling the family estate.”

Daniel frowned.

“That sounds backward.”

“It was.”

Emily nodded.

“William believed having a child might force Adrian to change.”

“He was wrong.”

“Very.”

Then Emily said:

“But Adrian discovered a loophole.”

“What loophole?”

“If no legitimate granddaughter survived to thirty, control reverted.”

“To Adrian?”

“No.”

“To the trustees.”

“Who were?”

“Robert and Nathan.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“My father?”

“Eventually.”

“Why?”

“William trusted Nathan.”

That explained Nathan’s role.

But not mine.

“So Adrian needed me dead?”

“Legally dead.”

Emily looked directly at me.

“Not physically.”

The old death certificate.

The fire.

Suddenly I understood.

“He declared me dead as a child.”

“Yes.”

“So the trust should have reverted.”

“It almost did.”

“What stopped it?”

“Caroline.”

My mother.

Emily's voice softened.

“She proved you were alive.”

“How?”

“She hid something inside the trust.”

“What?”

“Your biological profile.”

I stared at her.

“DNA?”

“Not exactly. Blood markers. Medical records. Fingerprints later.”

“She kept updating it?”

“No.”

“Someone else did.”

I looked toward Thomas.

He had come with us.

My father went pale.

“You.”

He nodded.

“Every few years.”

“You secretly proved I was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if I stopped…”

Emily finished:

“Claire Mercer would become permanently deceased.”

I sat down.

Thomas had lied to me my entire life.

But hidden inside those lies was something I hadn't understood.

He had been keeping my legal existence alive.

“Why couldn't you tell me?”

“Because Adrian monitored the trust.”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“If he knew where you were, he would have found you.”

Emily interrupted.

“He did find her.”

Everyone turned.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

Thomas looked horrified.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Emily looked toward Daniel.

“Through him.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Adrian didn't arrange Claire meeting you.”

“Rachel did.”

“I know.”

“But Adrian discovered the relationship.”

“When?”

“Before your wedding.”

I remembered the letters.

Rachel had been instructed to wait until Daniel found me.

“Then why didn't Adrian stop us?”

Emily looked uncomfortable.

“Because your marriage benefited him.”

Daniel and I looked at each other.

“How?”

“If Claire married another Project M subject, her legal identity could be challenged.”

My stomach tightened.

“The DNA report.”

“Yes.”

“He's trying to prove we're related.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your marriage would become evidence that Claire Hart cannot legally be Claire Mercer.”

Daniel frowned.

“How?”

Emily took out another document.

“Because Claire Mercer has a registered biological brother.”

I stared at her.

“I have a brother?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Emily looked at Daniel.

My stomach dropped.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Not Daniel.”

I breathed again.

“Then who?”

“That's the problem.”

“What?”

“Nobody knows.”

She placed a birth record on the desk.

Male Infant Mercer.

Born eighteen months before me.

Mother:

Caroline Hale.

Father:

Adrian Mercer.

My brother.

“Where is he?”

Emily whispered:

“Missing.”

“For how long?”

“Twenty-eight years.”

Rachel looked at the document.

“What does he have to do with Claire turning thirty?”

“If Claire's brother is alive, he becomes co-controller of the trust when Claire turns thirty.”

“So Adrian needs him?”

“Yes.”

“Does Adrian know where he is?”

Emily stared at me.

“I think Adrian believes he's Daniel.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“What?”

“That's why he has spent years manipulating Daniel's identity.”

Suddenly Daniel’s multiple birth dates made sense.

His false surname.

His altered records.

The strange DNA samples.

Adrian had been trying to transform Daniel into my missing biological brother.

Not because Daniel actually was.

Because Adrian needed the paperwork to say he was.

I whispered:

“Then the DNA test saying we're cousins…”

“Was another attempt to establish a Mercer biological connection.”

Daniel looked furious.

“Why not just fake a sibling test?”

“Because modern DNA would destroy the lie.”

“So he's building a chain of older records.”

“Yes.”

A legal history.

Not scientific truth.

A mountain of manipulated paperwork strong enough to create doubt.

“Then why can't I turn thirty?”

Emily looked toward the window.

“Because the trust activates at midnight.”

“And?”

“Once it activates, Claire and her brother must both authenticate their identities.”

“What happens if only I appear?”

“The trust freezes.”

“And if Daniel appears as my brother?”

“Adrian can challenge control.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I won't.”

“I know.”

“Then Adrian loses.”

Emily looked at him.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian has another Daniel.”

Nobody moved.

“What does that mean?”

Emily opened the folder again.

Remember the twelve babies photographed under the name Daniel Mercer?

One of them had grown up under a different identity.

Adrian had found him.

“He has spent twenty-nine years preparing a substitute.”

“For Daniel?”

“For Claire's brother.”

My skin went cold.

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“But he'll appear on my birthday.”

“Yes.”

“And claim to be my brother.”

“Yes.”

Rachel whispered:

“How do we stop him?”

Emily looked at me.

“We find the real brother first.”

“Within six days?”

“Five now.”

Daniel paced toward the window.

“How?”

Emily removed a tiny cassette tape.

“This.”

My mother’s handwriting was on it.

FOR C-01 — IF MICHAEL FINDS YOU

Lena had told us Daniel's father used the fake name Michael.

Daniel stared at the tape.

“Michael.”

Emily nodded.

“Nathan.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“Nathan used Michael as an alias.”

Daniel went still.

His biological father had been the mysterious man Lena remembered.

“No.”

Emily continued.

“Nathan didn't know Lena knew him as Michael.”

Daniel stared at Thomas.

“Is that true?”

Thomas couldn't look at him.

“Yes.”

Lena hadn't been targeted by a stranger.

She had been targeted by Nathan.

Daniel's own father.

“But Nathan told us Adrian arranged everything.”

Emily nodded.

“That's why I told you not to trust him.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Why would my father lie?”

“Because Nathan wasn't investigating Project M.”

Emily paused.

“He helped create it.”

Silence.

Daniel sat down.

The man we had just started believing was another victim…

might have been one of its architects.

“Play the tape,” I said.

Emily found an old recorder in the cabinet.

She inserted it.

Static.

Then Caroline’s voice.

My mother.

“If Claire is hearing this, Michael has probably found Daniel.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Caroline continued.

“Michael believes Daniel is his son.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

Believes.

Not knows.

“He isn't.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Emily stared at the recorder.

The tape continued.

“Lena never knew what they did at the clinic.”

Daniel looked physically sick.

My mother continued:

“Daniel was not conceived naturally.”

Lena had been targeted because of her pregnancy.

But apparently even that was another false assumption.

“Adrian selected the donor.”

Daniel whispered:

“Who?”

The recording continued.

“Michael discovered the truth too late.”

Static swallowed several words.

Then Caroline’s voice returned.

“Daniel's biological father is—”

The tape distorted.

“No.”

Daniel grabbed the recorder.

“Come on.”

Static.

Then one word came through clearly.

“William.”

Everyone froze.

William Mercer.

Adrian and Robert’s father.

The man who supposedly died two years before Daniel was conceived.

Daniel whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Emily stared at him.

“Unless the clinic stored biological material.”

Nobody spoke.

Suddenly the inheritance scheme became horrifyingly clear.

Daniel hadn't merely been created as a substitute.

He had been deliberately conceived using the dead patriarch's biological material.

A child genetically connected to William Mercer.

A child who could challenge Adrian.

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s why my DNA mattered.”

“Yes.”

Thomas looked sick.

“That’s why Adrian wanted him.”

But the tape wasn't finished.

Caroline continued:

“Daniel was supposed to protect Claire’s inheritance one day.”

A pause.

“But Adrian discovered something none of us expected.”

Static.

Then:

“Claire's brother survived.”

My heart stopped.

Emily leaned toward the recorder.

“He survived?”

Caroline continued.

“And Michael took him.”

Daniel stared at me.

Nathan had taken my brother.

“When?”

I whispered.

The recording answered.

“The night of the fire.”

Daniel suddenly stood.

His memory.

The two little girls.

Robert carrying one child.

Another man.

Nathan.

“Michael was there.”

“Yes,” Thomas whispered.

Daniel's breathing quickened.

“I saw him.”

Another memory was returning.

“What?”

“He wasn't alone.”

“Who was with him?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“A boy.”

My heart pounded.

“How old?”

“Maybe three.”

My brother.

“Did Nathan take him?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I think so.”

The cassette clicked.

Finished.

Then Emily's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Nobody spoke.

A man's voice said:

“You really should stop playing Caroline's recordings.”

Nathan.

Daniel stepped toward the phone.

“You lied to me.”

Nathan didn't deny it.

“About which part?”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Who is Claire's brother?”

Silence.

“Nathan.”

“Who is he?”

Nathan sighed.

Then said:

“You've met him.”

Of course we had.

“Where?”

Daniel demanded.

“At your wedding.”

I grabbed the phone.

“What's his name?”

Nathan laughed quietly.

“You still don't understand why Rachel was told to bring you and Daniel together.”

“Tell me.”

“She wasn't waiting for Daniel.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“She was waiting for the man who followed Daniel.”

I looked at Rachel.

She looked confused.

Nathan continued:

“Go back to your wedding photographs.”

“Why?”

“Find the photograph taken immediately after your first dance.”

I opened my phone.

Our wedding album was backed up online.

I found it.

Daniel beside me.

Rachel behind us.

Marianne.

Thomas.

And near the edge of the photograph…

a man I recognized.

Not family.

Not exactly a friend.

Daniel's college roommate.

Ethan.

I had known Ethan almost as long as Daniel.

He had been Daniel’s best man.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“No.”

Nathan spoke through Emily's phone.

“His name isn't Ethan.”

My hands began shaking.

“Then who is he?”

Nathan answered:

“His birth name is Christopher Mercer.”

My biological brother.

Daniel's best friend was my brother.

And then Daniel said something that made everything worse.

“Claire…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Ethan called me this morning.”

“Why?”

“He asked whether we'd be home tonight.”

My blood went cold.

“Did you tell him?”

Daniel looked toward the clock.

“Yes.”

Before anyone could speak, our home security app sent an alert.

FRONT DOOR UNLOCKED.

Someone had entered our house.

Using a valid key.

Then the living-room camera appeared on Daniel's phone.

Ethan walked into our home.

He wasn't alone.

Behind him was Adrian Mercer.

And Adrian was carrying the original brass key that had started everything.
