MY HUSBAND USED OUR DAUGHTER'S NAME—AND SHE KNEW SOMETHING I DIDN'T Episode 4 of 6
I thought my seventeen-year-old daughter was completely unaware of her father's betrayal. Then I asked her about the mysterious package, and she started crying before I even finished my question. She admitted Ethan had given her a document and told her it was part of a college investment

I waited until Olivia came home.

I didn't want to question her over the phone. I didn't want her hearing this from someone else. Most of all, I didn't want my daughter to believe she had done something wrong simply because her father had involved her in something she didn't understand.

She arrived home just after six.

Olivia Brooks was seventeen, with fair skin, hazel-brown eyes, and long chestnut-brown hair usually tied in a loose ponytail. She wore a navy school sweatshirt, black leggings, and white sneakers. Her backpack hung from one shoulder.

“Mom? Why are you home early?”

“Can we talk?”

She looked at my face and immediately put down her bag.

“Is Dad okay?”

I took a breath.

“I'm not sure. But I need to ask you something. Did your father give you a package or document a few weeks ago?”

Her expression changed.

For a moment, she didn't speak.

Then she asked, “Did you find it?”

My heart sank.

“Find what, sweetheart?”

She looked toward the staircase.

“Can we talk in my room?”

I followed her upstairs.

Olivia opened her desk drawer and pulled out a large white envelope. It was sealed, but the flap had been opened and carefully pressed back down.

“Dad gave me this,” she said.

“When?”

“About three weeks ago.”

“What did he tell you?”

“He said it was for my future. Something about college and an investment account. He said I didn't need to worry about it because you and he had already agreed.”

I sat on the edge of her bed.

“Did he ask you to sign anything?”

She nodded.

“He said it was just an acknowledgment that I knew about the account. I signed one page.”

My chest tightened.

“Did you read it?”

“Not really. I trusted him.”

She handed me the envelope.

Inside were several printed pages. One was a beneficiary designation. Another referred to a proposed investment arrangement involving Andrew Collins's company.

Olivia's name appeared beside a percentage of the proposed proceeds.

But something else caught my attention.

The document referred to an authorization from me as her parent.

I had never given one.

“Olivia, did you see me sign anything?”

“No.”

“Did Dad tell you I had?”

She nodded slowly.

“He said you were busy and didn't want to deal with the paperwork. He told me not to bother you because you were already stressed about Grandma's house.”

I felt sick.

Then Olivia began crying.

“Mom, am I in trouble?”

I pulled her into my arms.

“No. You are not in trouble. You trusted your father. That's not your fault.”

She cried against my shoulder.

“I thought he was doing something good for me.”

“I know.”

Then she reached into her phone and opened a conversation.

“There's something else.”

She showed me a message from Ethan.

It read:

If Mom asks about the college paperwork, just tell her it's part of the savings plan we discussed. Don't mention Andrew yet. I'll explain everything when the transfer is finished.

I read it twice.

“Did he send you anything else?”

Olivia scrolled.

There was another message from the previous week.

Please don't tell Mom about the account. She'll misunderstand it and make everything difficult.

My daughter looked at me.

“I didn't know there was anything wrong. I thought you already knew.”

I kissed her forehead.

“You don't have to protect either of us by keeping secrets. If someone asks you to hide something involving money or legal documents, you can always come to me.”

She nodded.

That evening, I took the documents to Rachel Morgan.

She reviewed them carefully and asked Olivia a few questions with my permission. Rachel explained that Olivia's signature appeared on a page acknowledging receipt of information, but that did not establish that she had knowingly agreed to an investment or authorized anyone to use my identity.

The parent authorization was a different matter.

It contained a signature that appeared to be mine.

Rachel compared it with my genuine signature on other documents.

“I can't determine forgery from this copy alone,” she said. “But you are clearly disputing it. We need the original, the account records, and the person who submitted it.”

She made copies and explained how we could formally challenge the authorization.

Then she found another detail.

The proposed investment agreement had a transfer deadline.

Next Friday.

The same deadline Daniel had mentioned.

“Why is everyone in such a hurry?” I asked.

Rachel looked at the documents.

“Someone may have made promises based on money they didn't yet control. But we need the transaction records before we can say exactly what happened.”

I nodded.

Then Rachel asked a question I hadn't considered.

“Has Ethan ever had access to Olivia's identification documents?”

I thought about it.

“Yes. He handled some of her school and college applications.”

“Then we need to secure those records, too.”

I called the school the next morning and asked them to flag any unusual requests involving Olivia's personal information. I also helped her change the passwords on her personal accounts.

But I still needed to know why Daniel had waited so long to expose Ethan.

I called him.

He agreed to meet me at a quiet coffee shop.

When he arrived, he looked exhausted.

“Tell me the truth,” I said. “Why did you wait eleven months?”

Daniel stared at his coffee.

“Because Ethan told me Vanessa was pregnant.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He said she was expecting a baby. He told me he was trying to end the affair without destroying your family.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to. I thought if I gave him time, he'd tell you himself.”

I stared at him.

“So you protected him.”

“Yes.”

“Even while he was using my money?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn't know about the money at first. When I found the financial folder, I started looking into it. That's when I realized the situation was much bigger.”

“Why did you finally stand up at our anniversary dinner?”

He looked directly at me.

“Because I found out Ethan was planning to use Olivia's name. I couldn't keep quiet after that.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Is Vanessa really pregnant?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I don't know. But I know she told Ethan something that made him panic.”

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

It was Rachel.

“Natalie, I received a response from the bank's records department,” she said. “The account authorization was submitted with a copy of your identification and a parental consent form.”

“Can you tell who submitted it?”

There was a pause.

“The submission came through a business email account registered to Andrew Collins.”

I closed my eyes.

Rachel continued.

“And there's something else. The bank has a record of a payment made to Claire shortly after the account was opened.”

“How much?”

“Twenty thousand dollars.”

I already knew that part.

But Rachel wasn't finished.

“The payment description says it was for administrative consulting. We are requesting the supporting records.”

I looked across the coffee shop at Daniel.

He was watching me.

I whispered, “This goes all the way back to Andrew.”

Then Rachel said the words that changed everything.

“Natalie, I also found a separate document attached to the account. It appears to be an instruction to release the remaining funds to Andrew's company if a certain condition is met.”

“What condition?”

Rachel paused.

“Your husband submitted a statement claiming you had permanently left the marriage and would no longer challenge the account.”

I couldn't breathe.

He had not only lied about the money.

He had apparently prepared a document suggesting I had abandoned my right to question it.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did Ethan really think I would never find out?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Then he said quietly:

“He thought you would believe him over everyone else.”

And suddenly, I understood why he had chosen our anniversary dinner.

Ethan had wanted the entire family in one room, celebrating a marriage he had already begun dismantling.

But there was still one question I couldn't answer.

Why had Vanessa's pregnancy made him panic?

And why was Daniel so afraid of the answer?
