Episode 5: The Marriage Was Part of the Deal
Emma had spent months believing Lily married Ryan because she wanted the life Emma had built. But the red folder suggested something far more calculated. A hidden page referenced a private agreement, a financial deadline, and a condition tied to Lily’s marriage. When Emma finally learned who had arranged the deal,

Emma didn't sleep that night.

Richard Hale's warning kept replaying in her mind: If Emma sees the last page, she'll understand why Lily agreed to marry him.

By eight the next morning, she was back in Jonathan Reeves's office. The red folder sat between them inside a clear document sleeve.

Jonathan had spent the previous evening reviewing every page Richard had provided. He had also contacted the appropriate records office to request certified copies of the disputed filings.

“I want you to be careful about one thing,” he said. “A suspicious document isn't proof of a crime. We need to verify where this folder came from and whether these pages are authentic.”

Emma nodded, though her patience was wearing thin.

“Then let's verify them. But I want to know why my former best friend married my ex-husband right after they took my company.”

Jonathan opened the folder to the last page.

It was a draft agreement titled Strategic Acquisition and Management Transition . Several paragraphs had been blacked out in the copy, but a section near the bottom remained visible.

Upon completion of the ownership restructuring, the parties shall proceed with the agreed personal and financial arrangements.

Below that sentence were three sets of initials.

R.B.

L.M.

And a third set Emma didn't recognize.

“Who is M.V.?” she asked.

“That's what we're trying to establish,” Jonathan replied.

Emma looked at the next line. It mentioned a payment to be released once the acquisition was completed and the new management structure was accepted by the investor.

The amount was $2.4 million.

She stared at it.

“Two point four million dollars?”

“That's what the draft says. We haven't established whether the payment was ever made, or who was supposed to receive it.”

Emma thought of the expensive wedding Lily had posted online. The designer dress. The private estate. The champagne towers. At the time, Emma had assumed Ryan was spending money to show the world how happy he was without her.

Now the celebration looked different.

“Could that money have been Lily's price for helping him?”

“It could have been a proposed incentive, but we cannot conclude that from this page alone,” Jonathan said. “The complete agreement and the financial records matter.”

Emma leaned back, fighting the urge to tear the document in half.

Then her phone vibrated.

Lily Monroe calling.

Emma nearly declined.

Instead, she answered and put the call on speaker.

“Emma?” Lily's voice was unsteady. “Please don't hang up.”

“What do you want?”

“I need to see you.”

“You married my husband, helped take my business, and let everyone believe I abandoned it. What could you possibly have left to say?”

Silence.

Then Lily whispered, “Ryan told me the ownership paperwork was already settled before we got married. He said you had signed everything.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No. I expect you not to believe anything I say. But there's something you don't know.”

Jonathan silently motioned for Emma to keep Lily talking, without making promises or accusations.

“Then say it,” Emma replied.

“I found a bank statement in Ryan's study. There's a transfer scheduled for Friday. Two point four million dollars.”

Emma's eyes met Jonathan's.

“Who is receiving it?”

“I don't know. The account name is abbreviated. M.V. But when I asked Ryan about it, he took the statement from me and told me to stop looking through his things.”

“Why are you telling me now?”

Lily's breathing shook through the speaker.

“Because last night I heard him on the phone. He said that once the transfer cleared, nobody would be able to make him give anything back. Then he said you were about to become a problem again.”

Emma's fingers tightened around her phone.

“Lily, did you know about the agreement in the red folder?”

“What red folder?”

“The one Richard Hale received. It describes an acquisition and a personal arrangement.”

A long silence followed.

Then Lily said, “I signed something before the wedding. Ryan told me it was a confidentiality agreement. He said it was normal because we were combining our business interests.”

“Did you read it?”

“I read some of it. There was a clause about a payment if the restructuring was completed. I thought it was compensation for the marketing work I'd done.”

“You thought you were being paid millions of dollars to market my company?”

“No!” Lily's voice cracked. “He told me the money was going to the expansion team. I didn't know what it really meant.”

Emma closed her eyes. The woman on the phone had once been the person she called when she was frightened, the person who held her hand when her mother was sick, the person who promised she would never let anyone hurt her.

Now Emma couldn't tell whether Lily was finally telling the truth or simply trying to escape the consequences.

“Why did you marry him?” Emma asked.

Lily didn't answer immediately.

“Because he told me you had already moved on,” she finally said. “He said you didn't love him anymore, that you were planning to sell the company and leave. He said we could build something together.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to believe him.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“I know.”

For the first time, Lily sounded less like the confident woman in the photographs and more like someone who had discovered that the life she wanted was built on a lie.

Emma's anger didn't disappear. If anything, it became sharper.

“You still made choices, Lily. You could have called me. You could have asked to see the documents. You could have told me what was happening.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I. I was afraid when my employees lost their jobs. I was afraid when I realized the company I built was gone. And you were standing beside the man who did it.”

Lily began to cry.

Jonathan wrote a note and slid it toward Emma: Ask her to preserve the statement and agreement. No confrontation with Ryan.

Emma took a breath.

“If you really want to tell the truth, don't alter or destroy anything. Preserve the bank statement, your agreement, and any messages about the transfer. Don't send me anything you aren't legally allowed to share. Speak with your own lawyer before making decisions.”

“You'd help me?”

“I'm not helping you, Lily. I'm trying to find out what happened.”

Before Lily could answer, a man's voice sounded in the background.

“Who are you talking to?”

Ryan.

Lily gasped.

“Emma, I have to—”

The call ended.

For several seconds, Emma stared at the blank screen.

Then a new message appeared from an unknown number.

Stop looking for the money. M.V. isn't who you think it is.

Jonathan read it over her shoulder.

“Don't reply,” he said. “Save the message and preserve the original information. We'll determine whether it can be traced and whether it's connected to the documents.”

Emma looked again at the initials on the agreement.

M.V.

A name hidden behind a payment, a secret agreement, and a marriage that might never have been what it seemed.

“Whoever M.V. is,” Emma said, “they know Ryan's plan.”

Jonathan closed the folder.

“Or they helped create it.”

Emma felt a cold wave move through her.

Friday was only three days away.

If the $2.4 million transfer was real, somebody was preparing to move a fortune before anyone could challenge the deal. And the anonymous sender had just warned her that the person behind the initials was more dangerous than she understood.

For the first time, Emma wondered whether exposing Ryan and Lily would be enough.

Because the person who might have paid for her company's destruction was still hiding in plain sight.

And the clock was running.
