At first glance, a classroom “fart corner” sounds like the setup to a fourth-grade joke, but for Valecia Broussard, a 38-year-old teacher from Pearland, Texas, it became a surprisingly thoughtful solution to a very real classroom problem.

Broussard created the unconventional corner at the beginning of this school year after noticing how comfortable her students had become with passing gas around one another. Her TikTok explaining the idea went viral, earning nearly 50 million views and turning an ordinary classroom routine into an internet sensation.

However, beneath all the laughs, Broussard tells PEOPLE exclusively that there is a more meaningful lesson: “The bigger idea is that while we are all different, read on different levels, have different home lives, and different personalities, we are all human.”

Broussard is in her 15th year of teaching and currently teaches fourth-grade Reading and Language Arts.

While preparing her classroom for the new school year, she started thinking about the routines and expectations that would help her students have a successful year, and decided it was time to address a behavior that had become so common it was happening nearly every day.

“Over the past three years, I noticed that my students were shockingly and extremely comfortable with passing gas in front of one another. When I say in front of one another, that also means, on one another,” Broussard explains. “They would fart in their desks while doing assignments, while sharpening pencils, when doing collaborative work, while walking around the classroom looking for a laptop, etc.”

Instead of treating the behavior as something shameful, however, Broussard decided to create a designated place for students to handle their toots with confidence — and to “keep the funk in one area.”

Although she emphasizes that they are “more than welcome” to use the restroom, the corner — complete with air fresheners — gives students another choice.

What might seem like a “silly” approach to others was, for Broussard, a way of reframing a normal bodily function that adults often view as taboo.

“I slowly began to respect the fact that 9- and 10-year-olds were bold enough to normalize tooting and refused to allow their stomachs to hurt, which in the long run can cause digestive issues,” she says.

Luckily, the students have “responded very positively” to the idea of a “fart corner,” with little hesitation. They regularly use the corner and return to their schoolwork without making a big production out of it. Broussard says the routine is straightforward and has become part of the classroom environment.

“Because it is normalized within this generation, it is not embarrassing from what I have seen,” Broussard reveals. “They simply go to the corner, handle their business, spray their choice of air freshener and go back to what they were previously doing.”

The corner has even received some love from students who have chosen to help decorate it. Flowers colored by the children now surround the “fart corner” sign, giving the unusual classroom feature a cheerful touch.

According to Broussard, adults have been just as entertained.

Parents who have visited the classroom, fellow teachers and administrators have viewed the approach as a “hilarious, yet brilliant idea” — especially given that many have also witnessed the same behavior at school or at home.

After posting a video of the “fart corner” online, Broussard’s TikTok quickly reached millions of viewers, most of whom found the idea funny and surprisingly relatable. The attention also sparked stories from people who said they wish they had had a similar option in their “corporate offices, homes and classrooms.”

Still, despite all the attention, Broussard says she never intended to become a viral sensation and has remained focused on why she created the corner in the first place.

“The response has been overall very optimistic, and most people find it amusing, which I am absolutely grateful for,” she says. “My intentions were to genuinely create a solution for a minor classroom issue.”

Now that her unusual classroom idea has gone viral, Broussard hopes other teachers will take the same flexible approach to creating a positive environment. Her advice is less about copying her idea and more about finding what works for each classroom.

“Regardless of what that may be, students and teachers deserve to be comfortable and content throughout the school day,” Broussard tells PEOPLE.
