A third Dan Sullivan has weighed in on the Alaska Senate race involving two candidates also sharing the name.

Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan is standing for reelection on Nov. 3, with his opponents set to include former U.S. Rep Mary Peltola, a Democrat, and Dan J. Sullivan, Jr., a retired schoolteacher who will appear on the ballot with no party affiliation.

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Dan A. Sullivan, a former Republican mayor of Anchorage, endorsed the incumbent senator and poked fun at the similar names.

“As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Daniel S. Sullivan,” he wrote on Facebook. “He’s been great for Alaska.”

Both Dan S. Sullivan and Peltola have made it to November’s election, following Tuesday’s all-party primary that advanced the top four candidates, regardless of their party affiliation.

The pair received 42.7% and 48.1% of the vote, respectively, and the remaining two candidates are still to be determined with almost all votes counted.

With 401 of 403 precincts reporting, Dan J. Sullivan, who describes himself as a “teacher, forester, cancer survivor, and longtime Alaskan,” was in third place with 2.4% of the vote, putting him in position to advance, too.

However, his campaign has drawn controversy, with Republicans including Dan S. alleging that Dan J. is on the ballot solely to confuse voters and eat into his share of the vote. The GOP has accused Dan J. of working with Peltola, per NBC News, though both Dan J. and Peltola have denied being in cahoots.

Last month, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that Dan J. can stay on the ballot after he was originally disqualified by the state’s Division of Elections, NBC News reported.

Prosecutors investigated whether his campaign could have been part of a conspiracy to confuse voters, with the Department of Justice issuing subpoenas to require witnesses linked to Dan J.’s campaign to share information earlier in August as the investigation continues, per the outlet.

PEOPLE reached out to Dan J. Sullivan Jr. for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Democrats have not won a Senate election in Alaska since 2008, but the party hopes to flip the seat in the midterms. The Cook Political Report rates the race as a tossup after Peltola’s first-place finish in the primary race.

In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump won the state by a 13.1-point margin over Kamala Harris, his third consecutive victory in the state, as he returned to the presidency for a second non-consecutive term.
