GMA’s Lara Spencer Celebrates 8 Years of Marriage with Her Husband Rick McVey During Getaway in Sicily

She and her tech entrepreneur husband tied the knot in Vail, Colo., on Sept. 1, 2018

Lara Spencer and her husband, Rick McVey, are celebrating eight years of marriage in a special way.

The Good Morning America contributor, 57, and the tech entrepreneur, 67, are enjoying a getaway in Sicily. Spencer has been sharing highlights of their trip on Instagram, including a photo of herself and McVey posing together by the sea in Taormina to mark their latest wedding anniversary.

“Happy anniversary baby!!! 9-1-18. ❤️,” she wrote in the caption of the Sept. 1 post. Her ABC colleague Will Reeve shared his love in the comments, writing, “Happy anniversary kids!”

Two days earlier, on Sunday, Aug. 30, Spencer shared a collection of photos of the pair exploring the sights of Ortigia together. On Saturday, Aug. 29, she posted photos of the two visiting San Domenico Palace, posing together at a restaurant table and enjoying some gelato.

“Research trip ❤️🇫🇷🇮🇹🍕,” the That Thrifting Show host quipped in the caption.

Spencer and McVey — the founder of MarketAxess, a successful global electronic trading forum — met on a blind date after being set up by a mutual friend. They dated for two years before getting married on Sept. 1, 2018, in Vail, Colo., and blending their families.

Spencer shares two children, son Duff, 24, and daughter Kate, 22, with her ex-husband, David Haffenreffer. McVey has three adult daughters from a previous marriage.

Spencer and McVey share a passion for travel and have taken many trips together. To celebrate their third wedding anniversary in 2021, they went to Capri, Italy, and the Amalfi Coast.

“3 years after the wedding….but worth the wait 🇮🇹❤️,” Spencer captioned a smiling photo of herself and Rick on the Italian coast at the time.

Days before her and McVey’s trip to Sicily for their eighth anniversary, Spencer shared an emotional post on Instagram about dropping her daughter off at college.

Alongside a childhood photo of Kate, she wrote in part, “Tomorrow I will drive this little girl to her senior year at her dream school. We leave at 5 am for 14 hours of amazing mother-daughter time. I am so grateful for the opportunity and so lucky I have a job that has allowed me to be there for the games and plays and all the moments.”

She continued, “I cherish every one of them. But my lord it goes by so fast. It feels like slow motion when they are babies and you are over your head — and during the younger school years too. And then somewhere in high school it feels like — at least it did for me — that life hits the gas pedal and it all happens way too quickly. ‘The days are long but the years fly by.’ My mom used to say that and as usual she was right.”

Spencer concluded her message with some words of encouragement for other parents sending their kids off to college: “Moms and Dads — Big hugs to you. I feel your pain. Let’s all remember — we did a good job.”
