Peter Lassally played a major role in changing the late-night landscape.
Bill Carter, a media reporter and author of The Late Shift: Letterman, Leno, and the Network Battle for the Night, recently appeared on Nostalgia Tonight, where he opened up to host Joe Sibilia about how Lassally was an “absolutely crucial” force in shaping David Letterman‘s career.
Carter explained that the legendary executive producer, who died in July 2026 at 93, was a major support system for Letterman as he digested news that The Tonight Show hosting gig would go to Jay Leno instead of him in 1992.
“I think Peter’s guidance was hugely, hugely important to Dave. And as it eventuated, absolutely crucial in what happened,” Carter says, noting that being passed over for the hosting spot was entirely “devastating” to Letterman.

“Psychologically, Dave was in a mess at this time. He really was. He wanted that show more than life itself. You know, he desperately wanted the show,” Carter explained.
It was for that reason that Letterman was considering an offer that indicated he might take the reins from Leno after a year or so if he stayed with NBC.
Lassally didn’t believe in the deal and said as much to Letterman, but the host was still clinging to a career-long dream, according to Carter, who noted, “Dave was still going to do it because it was his dream. And he just didn’t want to listen anymore.”
The executive finally had an idea of who might be able to get through to Letterman and reached out to Johnny Carson, who Carter said was desperately trying to stay out of the public discussion about his successor.
Lassally had to persuade both men to speak. When he did, Letterman allegedly told Carson, “I’m in hell here. I don’t know what to do, Johnny.” While Carson was adamant that Letterman had to make his own decision, he did concede, “I would walk.”

In 1993, Letterman did just that, making the move to CBS and launching The Late Show with David Letterman. Carter said Letterman had immense gratitude for Lassally for helping him through the troubled time, making it one of the moments that earned the executive the title of “host whisperer.”
Earlier this year, NBC announced Lassally’s death, writing, “When Johnny Carson and David Letterman needed counsel and an honest opinion, they immediately went to Peter Lassally, the professor of late night. His relationship to each of these giants was immeasurable and both of them would undoubtedly say his contribution to their success was so impactful that it would be difficult to put in words. A quiet man whose influence and stature spoke volumes, Peter’s brilliance was in shaping what we watch, how we watch and why late night was, and remains, vitally significant.”
Lassally is survived by his son and his daughter, Andrea, and his grandchildren, Walker, Eloise, Annabel and Owen. Alice, his wife of 60 years, predeceased him.
