Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, a traditional Ugandan king, has died at age 34, following reports that he was critically ill and receiving treatment in the U.S.

The king was listed as the youngest reigning monarch by the Guinness World Records and ruled from the age of 3 until he died on Thursday, Aug. 27

He ruled the Bantu kingdom of Tooro in western Uganda; while he held no political power, he wielded significant cultural influence

A traditional Ugandan king, named the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died. He was 34.

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV became king of Tooro, a Bantu kingdom in the west of Uganda, in 1995, when he was 3, after his father died, according to local newspaper The Daily Monitor.

Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced his king’s death with “profound sadness and a heavy heart,” he said in a statement, sharing that he died at about 10 p.m. local time on Thursday, Aug. 27.

“This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda,” he said. “I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time.”

He added that funeral arrangements would follow in due course, and said the identity of his heir would be formally revealed “in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.”

The leader did not share a cause of death, but earlier on Thursday, a Ugandan government minister claimed the king had been critically ill and seeking treatment in the U.S., according to The Daily Monitor.

Guinness World Records listed him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, and he ruled over more than two million people. He was the kingdom’s 13th monarch; the kingdom was founded more than 200 years ago.

Like several other traditional Ugandan monarchs, the king held no political power but wielded considerable cultural influence in a country led by an elected president. The youngest sovereign monarch, per Guinness World Records, is 46-year-old Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, who has been Emir of Qatar since 2013.​

Rukidi IV succeeded his father, Olimi Tooro, who died on Aug. 26, 1995, at age 49. Throughout his childhood, a regency of family members and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni oversaw his reign, The Daily Monitor reported.

His crowning ceremony took place on April 17, 2010, the day after his 18th birthday.

Over the course of his reign, he promoted causes including youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, health advocacy and HIV/AIDS awareness, per The Daily Monitor.

He also launched the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045 development framework to secure better living standards and long-term prosperity, per the newspaper.

Away from his royal duties, he was a keen soccer fan, with local newspaper The Independent reporting that he supported English Premier League champions Arsenal and often attended Amasaza Cup games in Tooro.
