Christopher Nolan and Matt Damon‘s The Odyssey has sailed past Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman‘s 2024 superhero team-up movie Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.

On Thursday, Aug. 20, multiple outlets reported that Nolan’s summer blockbuster has officially made $1.352 billion globally, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine‘s $1.338 billion gross during the summer of 2024. The Odyssey has now made $516.3 million in North America alone; the film is the second-highest-grossing movie of the year so far behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which debuted in theaters two weeks after The Odyssey‘s initial release.

The Odyssey, which also stars Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson among a large ensemble of star-studded names, started strong following its July 17 release with $124.5 million collected from 3,919 theaters in the United States and another $139.6 million brought in internationally during its opening weekend at the box office.

Back in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine made some $205 million at the domestic box office during its first weekend in theaters. The movie unseated Joaquin Phoenix’s 2019 comic book movie Joker as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever at that time.

Deadpool & Wolverine was the third of Reynolds Deadpool movies and the first to feature Jackman, 57, as his fan-favorite X-Men character Logan/Wolverine since 2017’s Logan. The movie followed Deadpool’s efforts to prevent the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Time Variance Authority from ending his universe by working with a Wolverine from a wholly different universe after they both get stuck in a place known as “the Void,” where they meet characters from past Marvel movies like Chris Evans‘ Johnny Storm, Wesley Snipes‘ Blade, Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Channing Tatum from a never-made Gambit movie.

Reynolds, 49, even took to social media to congratulate The Odyssey on passing his most recent movie at the box office. He shared a clip of Damon, 55, walking in the woods in The Odyssey matched with a fight scene between Deadpool and Wolverine from his movie that takes place within a Honda Odyssey in the woods, as if Odysseus stumbled upon the fight. “Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time,” he wrote. “That is one helluva car.”

While The Odyssey continues to rise, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is outpacing it at the box office among all movies. The film is the fourth-highest-grossing movie ever at the North American box office and became the fastest movie to hit the $800 million mark at the domestic box office, as Deadline reported on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The Odyssey is in theaters now. It’s unclear when Reynolds may portray Deadpool again, but he appeared to tease a potential Deadpool appearance in this December’s Avengers: Doomsday when he made a surprise cameo as the character during Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in July.
