Growing up, Maggie Patterson thought having a chapel inside her home was normal. Years later, she returned to exchange vows there after receiving special permission from the bishop.

NEED TO KNOW

Maggie Patterson grew up treating the private chapel inside her family’s home as just another room, often showing it to friends who came to visit

Before she could marry there in 2022, her priest had to receive special permission from the bishop to hold the ceremony inside the chapel

As her parents prepare to sell the home, Patterson is reflecting on the family memories made far beyond the chapel itself

Whenever Maggie Patterson, 27, invited friends over, they all wanted to see the same room. Before long, giving tours of the private chapel upstairs became part of having people over.

Years later, Patterson shared glimpses of her parents’ historic home on TikTok, where viewers were stunned to discover the family had a chapel under the same roof as their library, laundry room and living spaces. But to Patterson, it never felt unusual.

“I never thought of it as spooky or off-limits,” Patterson tells PEOPLE. “To us it was just part of the house. It became something I loved showing off. Anytime friends came over, the chapel was the first stop.”

Even with its stained-glass windows and marble pillars, the chapel wasn’t where everyday life happened. Patterson grew up with six siblings, and she says family life looked much like it would in any other home — just on a larger scale.

“Christmas was always the big one,” she says. “With so many rooms, everyone would scatter and gather in different corners of the house, but the kitchen was the real hangout spot, thanks to a sofa right in there.”

One holiday was so lively that a stranger walked up to the front door after spotting all the cars outside and asked whether the family was running a bed-and-breakfast.

Patterson also found her own quiet corner of the house in the four-season room, where she loved sitting while looking out over the busy street below.

“I’ve always loved that mix of being downtown but tucked into this quiet, light-filled space,” she says.

By the time she got engaged, Patterson already knew exactly where she wanted to get married. Holding the ceremony inside the chapel where she’d spent her childhood felt like the perfect fit, and her husband immediately agreed.

Her mother, however, wasn’t convinced it would even be possible. Because it was a Catholic wedding outside of a church, their priest had to ask the bishop for special permission before they could exchange vows there.

Once approval came through, about 40 of the couple’s closest friends and family gathered inside the chapel in 2022. A harpist played from the living room during the ceremony before everyone celebrated with a champagne toast.

“It made the space feel exactly like what it was always meant to be for,” Patterson says.

Today, when visitors admire the chapel and the home’s historic architecture, Patterson says they’re often drawn to the grand details first. She hopes they also notice the quieter touches that made the house feel like home to her family.

“People walk through gushing over the chapel, the size of the house, all of it,” she says. “But what they miss is my mom’s touch in the small stuff. She picked out most of the hardware throughout the house — light switches, faucets, tile, you name it. It’s not flashy, so you probably wouldn’t notice it on a first walk-through, but once you know, you can’t unsee it. She deserves more credit for that than she gets.”
