The Sons of Anarchy cast is getting back together — but not as leather-clad members of SAMCRO.

FX announced in August 2026 that it greenlit the spinoff Legends, a meta miniseries that stars the original cast as fictionalized versions of themselves who face a real-world danger while reuniting at a fan convention.

Charlie Hunnam, who led Sons of Anarchy as Jax Teller, developed the unconventional concept and serves as an executive producer after years of shutting down any hope that he would reprise his iconic role.

“He’s dead now,” The Gentlemen star told PEOPLE in November 2020 of his character, who seemingly died in the series finale. “So there would be no ever bringing him back ... When he died, he died.”

With Jax and many of the biker drama’s beloved characters meeting grisly fates, a traditional reunion was always unlikely. But star Theo Rossi, who played Juan-Carlos “Juice” Ortiz, hinted to Deadline in March 2023 that there could be a “wild” way to get the gang back together, adding that if it happened, it would be “insane.”

What is the Sons of Anarchy spinoff Legends about?

Legends won’t bring Jax and the rest of SAMCRO back from the dead. Instead, the meta-thriller will see Hunnam and his former costars play fictionalized versions of themselves who are pulled into a dangerous situation that echoes the world of Sons of Anarchy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the official logline reads, “When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”

FX Entertainment president Nick Grad said in a statement that Hunnam’s “inspired idea” serves as “both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”

Who is in the cast of the Sons of Anarchy spinoff Legends?

In addition to Hunnam and Rossi returning, several familiar faces from Sons of Anarchy have signed on for the spinoff.

Ron Perlman, who played Clay Morrow; Katey Sagal, who played Gemma Teller Morrow; Maggie Siff, who played Dr. Tara Knowles; Mark Boone Junior, who played Bobby Munson; Tommy Flanagan, who played Chibs; and Kim Coates, who played Tig.

Several of the confirmed Legends cast members shared the news online, including Perlman, who posted a screenshot of an article announcing the series on Instagram and wrote, “The Crow Flies Again!!!”

Additional cast members will be announced at a later date, per The Hollywood Reporter.

What has Charlie Hunnam said about Legends?

While Hunnam hasn’t yet spoken out about Legends, he has talked quite a bit about his reluctance to revive Jax out of respect for how deeply intertwined the two became during seven years of filming.

“I had become that character, had become so deeply integrated into who I was, I literally didn’t realize until the day we wrapped and we put him to rest and I felt I went through a period of two or three weeks of, like, real bereavement,” the actor told Entertainment Tonight in August 2018.

Hunnam said his appreciation for Jax was still so high that he kept the character’s leather vest and never lets anyone wear it.

“I would never bring him back from the dead for something like that,” he added when asked if Jax would make an appearance in the spinoff Mayans M.C. “He sort of became sacred to me.”

When will the Sons of Anarchy spinoff Legends be released?

FX has not announced a release date for Legends.
