Carlos Alcaraz Confirms US Open Return After Nagging Wrist Injury Forced Him to Miss Multiple Majors

Carlos Alcaraz announced on Thursday, Aug. 20 that he will compete in the US Open and return to tennis after a wrist injury kept him out of two major tournaments over four months.

Carlos Alcaraz is making his return.

After being away from the court for four months with a wrist injury, the 23-year-old tennis star announced on Thursday, Aug. 20 that he’s competing in the upcoming US Open, which kicks off at the end of the month in New York City.

Alcaraz shared a post on Instagram that included a video of him saying “Here we go!” in his native Spanish and English. The post was in collaboration with sportswriter Fabrizio Romano, who added in the caption: “Here we go! Carlos Alcaraz will return to the tour at the US Open after spending four months sidelined with a right wrist injury. Ready to come back.”

Fans celebrated the news in the comments. “Omg did I hear that right?? 😍 Vamos 🔥,” said one, while another wrote, “There couldn’t be a more beautiful news.”

Alcaraz won the US Open in 2022 and again in 2025. The last tournament he competed in was the Barcelona Open in April, before he announced he had to withdraw from the Rome Open and the famed French Open as his wrist injury lingered. Alcaraz was also forced to miss Wimbledon.

In a post on X back in April, he said, “After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros as we wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to the court,” translated from Spanish.

Alcaraz said it was “a difficult time” for him, but said he’s “sure we will come out of it stronger.”

According to the New York Times, Alcaraz was dealing with tenosynovitis, which affects a tendon in the wrist. He missed two Grand Slams this year because of it and the outlet said his team has been taking a “cautious approach” to his recovery.

The 2026 US Open main draw begins on Aug. 30 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 13.
