FBI Confiscates Disgraced Ex-Rep. Eric Swalwell’s Electronic Devices at the Airport Before Searching His D.C. Home: Report

Former California Rep. Eric Swalwell has become the subject of a federal investigation, according to multiple reports.

FBI agents held Swalwell at the San Francisco Airport on Saturday, Aug. 15, serving him with a search warrant and seizing his electronic devices, including his cell phone, CNN, Fox News Digital and CBS News confirm.

The warrant was tied to the federal criminal investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Swalwell.

The Daily Mail was the first to report the news.

Swalwell was not arrested or detained, according to Fox News Digital.

Swalwell, 45, suspended his campaign for governor of California in April after multiple women accused him of inappropriate behavior ranging from sending lewd, unwanted messages to drugging, raping and choking them. Swalwell has publicly denied the allegations against him.

The outlets report that FBI agents also entered Swalwell’s house in Washington, D.C., the following day, Sunday, Aug. 16, where he lived with his wife, Brittany Watts, and their three children. The Swalwell family was not home at the time. Agents entered the home and seized “additional undisclosed potential evidence,” according to the Mail.

PEOPLE has reached out to the FBI San Francisco and Washington D.C. for comment.

The status of Swalwell’s marriage to Watts is currently unknown, though she was spotted without her wedding ring in April amid the allegations.

The couple share children Nelson, 8, Cricket, 7, and Hank, 4.

A source previously told PEOPLE that Watts “would never condone or excuse any of Eric’s behavior in any way,” saying there was “no way” Watts knew about the allegations in advance.

The source added of Watts that, “She’s focused on protecting her children and navigating this excruciating situation as best she can. It’s very clear Eric was incredibly strategic at living a double life — he had everyone fooled.”

“I will fight the serious false allegations made against me,” Swalwell wrote upon his resignation. “However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”
