Giants QB Jameis Winston in Middle of Practice Brawl with Dolphins as Players Get Pulled from Ugly Scene

Things got ugly at the joint practice between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants.

According to ESPN, players from both teams were removed from the field due to multiple scuffles that broke out at the Baptist Health Training Complex in Florida on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Before practice began, Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said he’d be “very, very disappointed” if players threw punches and that anyone who did would be kicked out from practice, per ESPN.

Giants quarterback Jameis Winston and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor were among the players to be removed, as well as Dolphin’s offensive tackle Austin Jackson, the outlet said.

Jackson was “shoved to the ground” by Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux after Jackson reportedly threw a punch at Giants rookie Arvell Reese, according to ESPN. Jackson returned to practice later to participate in the final drills with the team, per the report.

Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart told reporters he “didn’t see what happened” when Winston was removed, per ESPN. “I just looked over and saw the red 19 jersey [Winston’s] and I was like, ‘I gotta go. I gotta go help my boy! I don’t know what’s going on over there.’ ” said Dart.

Giants coach John Harbaugh said, “In this sort of an environment, you have these rules of engagement that aren’t really rules of the game, and then somebody else goes over the line or they do go over the line and somebody needs to protect somebody and that’s where it goes. And I think as long as it doesn’t get out of control, where it gets a violent-type situation, it’s fine, you know?,” according to ESPN.

Harbaugh added, “And we decided that anybody that threw a punch in those scrimmages would be treated like the game. That’s why Jermaine didn’t practice toward the end. He didn’t really throw a hard punch, but it was to the face mask. And that’ll get you in the game. That’s a 15-yarder at least.”

Dolphins center Aaron Brewer told ESPN his team tries “to hold our composure as much as we can,” but added, “but when you out here playing football, it get chippy.”

“As I said before, people are out there competing, taking it all the way to the edge. We didn’t try to initiate anything, but if somebody come at you, you got to hold your ground,” Brewed told the outlet.

The Giants and Dolphins will come face-to-face again on Saturday when they play each other in a preseason game at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
