Groom Broke His Ankle Days Before His Wedding. He Used His Bride’s Grandpa’s Electric Scooter to Say ‘I Do’ and Party

His now-wife, Lisa Sheldon, said the injury affected their reception’s entrance plans as Andy was unable to walk down a flight of stairs

Instead, Lisa recalled, Andy entered on her grandpa’s electric scooter to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” highlighting the lyrics, “When your legs don’t work like they used to be before”

A groom rolled into his wedding on a mobility scooter, borrowed from his bride’s grandfather, after he broke his ankle amid his bachelor festivities.

Following a day of drinking with his friends a week before his nuptials, Andy Sheldon fell while walking down steps at a train station in Leeds, England — breaking his tibia, fibula and another bone in his ankle, according to Kennedy News and Media.

“I’m on my back on the stairs in agony. I looked down at my leg and my foot was pointing in the other direction,” recalled the 47-year-old man.

Sheldon, a gym instructor, added, “I remember being sprawled out on the station steps waiting for the ambulance to arrive. I think I was just in shock.”

The then groom-to-be was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary for an X-ray and then transferred to Hull Royal Hospital, where he found out surgery was required to pin his ankle joint back together.

Sheldon was immediately concerned about his bride, Lisa Sheldon, admitting, “At first I was gutted … as I felt like I had let Lisa down.”

Flash-forward to their May 28 wedding day: Andy sported a boot and used crushes and Lisa’ grandpa’s mobility scooter to get around.

“We didn’t let it ruin our day.” Lisa said, adding, “We borrowed [the scooter] and that was an absolute godsend. At first he didn’t want to use it, but he used it for a hospital appointment before and loved it.”

“One of the things I was thinking before the wedding is if he’s on crutches, we won’t be able to hold hands and walk around together,” she explained.

The mom of two continued, “It’s a really little thing, but when you’re holding hands you feel like one. But when he was in his chair we could.”

“He was in pain on the day, but you wouldn’t have known it. He just soldiered on,” Lisa gushed about her husband.

Andy added, “I owed it to Lisa, as at the end of the day, it’s her big day.”

Andy’s broken ankle affected their entrance plans at the reception.

“When we did our entrance song, we were both meant to walk down this staircase together, but we obviously couldn’t do that,” Lisa said. “I walked down the staircase ... to [Raye’s song] ‘Where Is My Husband!’ ”

She added, “Andy came through the door to Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ which has the lyrics, ‘When your legs don’t work like they used to be before.’ Everyone was saying it was the best wedding entrance.”

Another hiccup in their romantic milestone was the newlyweds postponing their planned honeymoon to allow Andy to fully recover.

Now, they plan to fly to Bali in September for their honeymoon.
