Jessica Alba is reflecting on the exciting changes her family is set to experience in the coming months.

The Honest Renovations co-host opened up about the transitional period she and her kids are currently in during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE to discuss the fourth season of the Roku Original series alongside her co-host Lizzy Mathis.

While Alba, 45, is preparing for her oldest daughter Honor Warren, 18, to attend college this fall, she’s also gearing up to move into “another space” with her kids, which she related to a similar scenario from the premiere episode of Honest Renovations season 4.

During the episode, Alba and Mathis help transform the New Jersey home of Susan Suarez, a widow and single mom of two who is preparing to send her son Jayden off to college. The design duo got to work transforming his room into a “sophisticated” space he can return to whenever he’s home, which made Alba consider how she wanted to do the same for her own kids.

“We were really excited about re-imagining [Jayden’s] room because being able to take it from a kid room to a young adult — that was awesome,” Alba tells PEOPLE. “And I was thinking about that even for my kids, because we’re moving into another space, and just what’s that next phase for each one of them.”

As she approaches this new beginning, the Honey actress reflects on how she wants to focus on curating her kids’ rooms so that they will “grow with them, so it doesn’t feel so dated,” she adds.

She also related to Suarez in that they’re both seeing their oldest kids off to college, which the star described as an “intense” feeling.

“Susan and I are very much in the same camp here, but her son is going to a school nearby and he’s coming home every weekend. That’s a little different,” she explains, referring to Honor’s decision to attend Yale University and move to Connecticut from California.

“It hasn’t really hit me personally, but I think for any parent, just that milestone… It’s intense,” she continues. “I don’t think you can prepare for it. You just have to tackle it when it happens.”

Season 4 of Honest Renovations sees Alba and Mathis head to the East Coast for the first time to help make families’ homes more functional. While they focus on the home renovation of it all, they also call on a number of experts to help each homeowner rethink other problem areas in their lives.

The hosts told PEOPLE they are especially excited for fans to see “a whole different vibe” that comes with renovating homes on the East Coast this season.

“Taking it to the East Coast, that was a big difference for us,” Alba said. “We’ve always done our renovations on the West Coast, and I just think the vibe of the East Coast and the square footage is so different. The homes are much older and there’s so much heritage, and you have to really honor the architecture.”
