Mom Killed and 4-Year-Old Son Injured After They Were Struck by a Car While Walking

A 44-year-old woman was fatally struck by a vehicle while she was walking with her 4-year-old son in Maryland.

On Monday, Aug. 17, around 8:25 p.m. local time, officials were dispatched to the intersection of Chapman Avenue and Twinbrook Parkway in Rockville following a report that a pedestrian had been struck, according to reports from Bethesda Today, CW affiliate WDVM and ABC affiliate WJLA.

When first responders arrived, they found a woman and child hurt in the roadway. The pair was transported to a nearby hospital, where the woman later died, according to the reports. Her son suffered minor injuries.

The victim has since been identified as 44-year-old Raoudha Khelifi, of Rockville, the outlets reported.

Degan Bartels, a spokesperson for the City of Rockville Police Department, confirmed to Bethesda Today that Khelifi and her son were walking in the crosswalk when they were both hit by a Toyota Camry.

The vehicle was going north on Chapman Avenue and turned right on Twinbrook Parkway when the crash occurred.

The driver and his passenger remained at the scene and are cooperating with authorities, the outlet reported.

The cause of the fatal collision is not yet clear, and an investigation is ongoing.

The City of Rockville Police Department and the state’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
