Nicole Kidman Reveals Her ‘Favorite Spell’ in Interview with Her Niece Ahead of Practical Magic 2 Release

Kidman’s niece Lucia Hawley, 28, interviewed the actress, 59, and her Practical Magic 2 costar Sandra Bullock for the U.K. outlet Sheer Luxe on Thursday, Aug. 27 ahead of the upcoming film’s release. In a clip from the interview shared on Instagram, Hawley, 28, breaks down the Kidman family’s mystical traditions and how they tie in with Kidman’s role as Gillian Owens.

“I don’t know if you know this about the Kidman women,” Hawley began.

“Okay,” Bullock, 62, chimed in.

“We sway to the more magical side,” Hawley continued. “Some people would say, witches. Grandma was born on Friday the 13th.”

The camera then panned to Kidman as she nodded along with Hawley’s retelling of their family history.

“Oh, it all makes sense now, okay,” Bullock says as Kidman laughs.

Hawley then asked the duo to share their “favorite spells.”

“Love spells,” Kidman quipped. “But if I’m a little bit upset with someone, I will write their name and put it in the freezer.”

“What does that do?” Bullock asked.

“Freezes them out,” Kidman joked.

“Grandma used to have a list of names in the ice cube area,” Hawley explained of Kidman’s mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, who died in 2024.

“You can come out of the freezer though,” Kidman continued.

“Do you then let the person know you’re out of the ice?” Bullock asked.

Hawley and Kidman answered with an emphatic “no.”

“They will feel it,” Hawley said as Kidman laughed.

“So, is that what happened, like, mid-shoot when all of a sudden you went cold and I was like, ‘Was I in the freezer?’ ” Bullock joked.

“No, no,” Kidman said, still laughing.

Kidman and Bullock starred as sisters Gillian and Sally Owens in the 1998 film Practical Magic, based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name. The film follows the pair of witches, descended from a fictional survivor of the Salem Witch Trials, as they fight off a curse that kills the men they fall in love with, while learning to accept the most magical parts of themselves and chart their own paths.

The sequel will see Sally’s daughters into young adulthood as they navigate their own magical legacies, while Gillian has traded her life of adventure and occasional danger for a quieter life with a black cat by her side. Things are shaken up when a mysterious figure (Lee Pace) arrives in the sisters’ quaint New England town with a new quest for them.

New additions to the cast in the follow-up to the iconic witchy romance are Joey King as Sally’s daughter, along with Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest will also reprise their roles as the eclectic aunts who raised the Owens sisters, always encouraging them to embrace their true magical selves.

Practical Magic 2 hits theaters on Sept. 10.
