Robin Williams’ Kids Revive His Instagram 12 Years After His Death to Create a ‘Safe’ Place to Honor Their Dad’s Legacy

Robin Williams’ children are finding a special way to keep their father’s legacy alive.

On Monday, Aug. 17, the three now-adult children of the late Mrs. Doubtfire star decided to revive their dad’s official Instagram account a month after what would have been his 75th birthday.

In the post, which was signed by his son Zachary “Zak” and Cody Alan and daughter Zelda, Williams’ children shared that they wanted to create a “safe, trusted place” to celebrate their dad’s legacy.

In the post, which was signed by his sons Zachary “Zak” and Cody, and daughter Zelda, Williams’ children shared that they wanted to create a “safe, trusted place” to celebrate their dad’s legacy as “technology evolves.”

“As we recognize what would be our Dad’s 75th year, we’re grateful to see new generations discovering his work while longtime fans continue to celebrate the joy he brought into their lives,” they wrote. “As technology evolves, we want this to be a safe, trusted place where the stories, photos, videos and memories shared reflect his legacy with authenticity, warmth, and care.”“This is our way of sharing his unique talent and humor with the world, including the moments that made us and so many of you laugh, as we remember our Dad’s extraordinary life and work,” they added. “He continues to inspire us and delight people all over the world.”

Since his death in 2014, the actor’s children have continued to honor him. On what would have been Robin’s 74th birthday in July 2025, his older son Zak remembered his dad by posting a tribute on Instagram. In the caption of the post, he penned an emotional message to the late actor.

“Today would have been my dad’s 74th birthday. Every year, this season arrives with gravity. In just sixty days, we pass through Father’s Day, his birthday, and the anniversary of his death. It’s a tender and complicated stretch of time. One that asks a lot of the heart,” he wrote. “For me, grief isn’t linear. It loops and echoes. It softens, then crescendos. But, alongside it lives a legacy, the kind built not from fame or recognition, but from generosity and relentless kindness.”“My father lived to make people feel seen. He gave permission to feel deeply and to laugh through the pain. In his absence, that mission continues,” he added. “So today, I hold close the idea that the best way to honor those we love is to live the values they stood for. To lead with service and compassion. To lift others when they’re down. And to find paths of light, even in the dark corners.”

He concluded his post by sharing a special message to anyone navigating grief.

“To anyone carrying loss right now: you’re not alone. You are part of a passage of love and connection that never really ends,” he wrote. “Happy birthday, Dad. Love you forever.”

Zak continues to find ways to keep his father’s legacy alive. In addition to his mental health-focused company, he also works with organizations like Glenn Close’s nonprofit, Bring Change to Mind, and the national policy and advocacy group Inseparable.

On the 10th anniversary of his dad’s death in 2024, Zak shared a photo of his dad from Mork & Mindy on Instagram, writing a sweet tribute to Williams.

“Today, I’m reflecting on the immense love you shared with all of us—your family, your friends, and everyone you met,” he penned. “You continue to inspire me every single day to do whatever I can to help create a more connected and loving world for our family. Love you forever. ❤️.”

Williams became a father when his first wife, Valerie Velardi, had Zak in 1983. After Williams and Velardi’s divorce in 1988, he married Marsha Garces the following year. Williams and Garces welcomed daughter Zelda later that same year and son Cody in 1991. Williams and Garces divorced in 2010.

Five years before his death, Williams reflected on how “proud” he was of his kids.

“I’m so proud of them in different ways, but have they always been cherubs? No, but that’s been part of the process,” Williams said on the Today show in 2009. “And am I the ‘world’s greatest dad?’ Not at all, I’m a work-in-progress, but I love them.”
