The episode aired in 1983 and featured Reagan promoting her “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign

Todd Bridges is recalling the day that then-First Lady Nancy Reagan filmed her guest appearance on Diff’rent Strokes.

Reagan appeared on the NBC sitcom in a season 5 episode titled “The Reporter,” in which she promoted her signature “Just Say No” anti-drug policy. The episode originally aired on March 19, 1983.

“Nancy Reagan was on the show, but the president came in the audience, and the audience was all Secret Service,” Bridges said. “It was the biggest, craziest nightmare ever. It was terrible.”

He continued, “But I tell you, I learned a lot, too, about Secret Service. One of the guys showed me in his trunk; they had surface-to-air missiles in there and stuff. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Yeah. It was a no-fly zone.”

“If they came close, they’d shoot you out the sky,” he said, adding with a laugh, “Man, it was crazy. And it was like, you got scanned when you came close, you got scanned again, then they would scan you again, and then scan you again before you actually got in the door. It was a nightmare. We couldn’t wait till she left.”

Diff’rent Strokes premiered in 1978, when Bridges was 12, meaning he was around 17 when the first lady came to set.

The sitcom, which aired for eight seasons, also starred Gary Coleman, Dana Plato, Conrad Bain, Danny Cooksey, Charlotte Rae, Mary Jo Catlett and Mary Ann Mobley. The show also launched the successful spinoff The Facts of Life, starring Charlotte Rae, which ran for nine seasons.
