Mica Miller met John-Paul Miller when she was a teenager attending the church where he was pastor

John-Paul has been accused by prosecutors of stalking and harassing Mica for months before her death in April 2024

For over two years, Mica Miller’s friends and family have questioned the circumstances surrounding her April 2024 death.

Mica’s marriage to John-Paul Miller is outlined in the Netflix docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife, which premiered on Netflix on Aug. 26. It traced their relationship from their first meeting at Solid Rock Church when she was a teenager to their subsequent affair and 2017 wedding.

However, their relationship was rocky, with Mica’s friends and family alleging that John-Paul exerted coercive control over her in Death of the Pastor’s Wife. After they separated in 2023, John-Paul allegedly placed several tracking devices on her car and released her nude photograph online, according to prosecutors. Mica died by suicide in April 2024.

In December 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office indicted John-Paul for alleged cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. His federal trial is scheduled for October.

John-Paul and Mica met at church and married in 2017

Mica first met John-Paul when she attended Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C., as a teenager, per Death of the Pastor’s Wife. John-Paul was the church’s pastor, and Mica quickly became the worship leader in charge of the church’s choir, per the docuseries.

John-Paul was married to Alison Williams, with whom he welcomed five children, per Mica’s obituary. Mica babysat their kids, per the docuseries. When Mica wed her first husband, Jeremy, when she was 18 years old, John-Paul officiated the wedding.

Then, in 2015, Mica and John-Paul began having an affair when she was 20 years old and he was 35 years old. They each eventually divorced their respective spouses and married in late 2017.

During Mica and John-Paul’s engagement, Mica was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In the docuseries, Mica’s friend Erica Rahr claimed the disorder “may have been triggered by a stressful situation.”

Mica’s friends and family have alleged that John-Paul “mentally tortured” her

In Death of the Pastor’s Wife, Mica’s friends and family alleged that John-Paul “mentally tortured” her during their marriage.

They detailed times when John-Paul allegedly refused to let Mica sleep until they had sex, had multiple affairs and coerced Mica into sexual contact with homeless men. According to their accounts and papers written by Mica provided by her attorney for the docuseries, Mica took testosterone to keep up with John-Paul’s sex drive.

“He would mentally torture her until she gave to him what he wanted,” Mica’s friend Bruna Pabon claimed.

The control allegedly extended to Mica’s behavior with friends. Once, according to Korn, he allegedly accused Mica of having an affair with Korn, which both Mica and Korn denied. When the two would hang out, Korn claimed that John-Paul would call after two hours, then 20 minutes later and then continuously.

“If she wasn’t leaving when he wanted her home or needed her, he’d show up,” she said.

When Mica went to her sister Sierra’s house one evening to avoid John-Paul, he showed up armed, her sister alleged in the docuseries.

“You can’t treat someone like this and then leave,” he allegedly wrote in a text message, which was shown in Death of the Pastor’s Wife. “I need you to act like a godly wife this one time and prioritize your marriage over your family, friends and feelings. What you’ve done in our marriage this time is totally unacceptable and no man would put up with it. But I’m willing to give you one more chance.”

Prosecutors have not accused John-Paul of these allegations and he has not faced charges in connection with them. He refused to comment to the producers of the docuseries.

John-Paul’s attorney Nathan S. Williams declined to comment to PEOPLE.

They separated in January 2023 and Mica filed for divorce

In Death of the Pastor’s Wife, Mica’s friends and family shared that although she tried to maintain their marriage, she ultimately separated from John-Paul in January 2023. Mica filed for divorce later that year, according to WPDE.

During their separation, Mica was working on rebuilding her life, working at a restaurant and living with a member of Solid Rock. However, she was relentlessly harassed by John-Paul, who, in one instance, contacted “her over 50 times in a single day,” prosecutors have alleged. Mica consistently had to change her phone number, according to friends and family in the docuseries.

Her siblings alleged in Death of the Pastor’s Wife that John-Paul called a mental hospital during their separation and initiated an involuntary hospitalization. She later allegedly reported to police that while she was in the hospital, John-Paul took her belongings, including her laptop, which contained nude photographs of her, per the docuseries.

When Mica was out of the hospital, she called police after finding her tire slashed with a piece of metal. Mechanics at her car dealership later allegedly found a tracking device on the car, per WPDE.

During that time, John-Paul also posted a nude photo of Mica online without her consent, according to prosecutors.

After dismissing her first divorce filing in February 2024, Mica filed for another divorce two months later in April. “Since the day we became husband and wife, I have been abused in every way I can think of — emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically,” she wrote in an affidavit that accompanied her filing, per Netflix’s Tudum.

Mica died by suicide in April 2024

On the morning of April 27, 2024 — two days after she served John-Paul a new set of divorce papers — Mica went for a drive around 10 a.m. before she was scheduled to work at J Peters Grill & Bar in Carolina Forest, S.C., at noon, per the docuseries. After she came back and got ready for work, she left and bought a gun, per security footage featured in the docuseries.

Mica was then spotted at a gas station, as seen in the docuseries security footage, before she drove to a park. There, Mica called 911 to let the operator know she was going to die by suicide and wanted to make sure her family would be able to find her location, per the docuseries.

Mica’s body was found at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. A medical examiner determined that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

John-Paul’s attorney, Russell B. Long, wrote in a May 2024 statement that the medical examiner’s finding of suicide “completely exonerates Pastor Miller of any wrongdoing.”

However, Mica’s friends and family have placed fault on John-Paul due to his alleged harassment.

“The only person who’s responsible for that day, regardless of who pulled the trigger, is John Paul,” Korn said in the docuseries. “It’s his fault she’s gone.”

John-Paul has denied any involvement in Mica’s death and also declined to comment to producers of the docuseries.

About a year after Mica’s death, John-Paul married Suzie Skinner. John-Paul and Skinner allegedly had an affair during his marriage to Mica, Mica’s friends and family claimed in the docuseries.

John-Paul was indicted on counts of cyberstalking and making false statements in December 2025

In December 2025, John-Paul was indicted on two counts: cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators, per a press release by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of South Carolina. John-Paul pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The indictment alleges John-Paul “sent unwanted and harassing communications to his estranged wife” starting in November 2022 and until her death, per the release.

John-Paul’s federal trial has been pushed to October 2026 and he is out of jail on a $100,000 bond, according to an August WPDE report.

John-Paul faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for cyberstalking and two years in prison for his false statements, as well as a fine of up to $250,000, per the U.S. Attorney’s Office release.
